Low energy? Restless nights? Exhaustion? We’ve all had feeling like this of some sort. Whilst the temptation to spend longer in bed, or have a heavily caffeinated drink are always tempting, there are some healthier tips which you can use to combat those feelings.

Tip one – balanced diet

Eating a well-balanced and healthy diet can improve your mind and sleep patterns. It's crucial to keep an eye on your food intake, especially in the evenings. Try to eat whole grains, fresh fruit and veg, brown rice, beans and pulses as part of your diet – by avoiding overprocessed foods you should see an improvement in your sleep and energy levels.

Tip two – dehydration

Caffeine interferes with the body's natural process of falling asleep, so reducing use of energy drinks, tea, coffee, and other beverages containing caffeine can be helpful.  As these products only offer a temporary burst of energy, try opting for a glass of water instead. This will rehydrate you, as one of the key signs of dehydration is fatigue.

Tip three – exercise

Any tension or anxiety that you may have experienced over the day might be relieved with exercise. However, avoid engaging in strenuous exercise right before bed because it may keep you awake. A great place to start is with some moderate exercise, such as walking, swimming, or riding a bike. Doing this regularly can give you the energy you need to complete daily tasks.

Tip four – stress

Being stressed can take serious toll on your body and mind, which in turn can affect your sleep quality and energy levels. Stress can be caused by many things, and there are many coping mechanisms which you can use to help support your stress levels. Read our top tips for dealing with stress here.
