Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when menstruation ends completely and is caused when our ovaries begin to produce less oestrogen, signalling the end of our reproductive years.
It may not always feel like it, but the menopause is perfectly natural and is not a medical disorder. However, it can be a time of great emotional and physical change and many women may feel they need a little extra help in getting through it.
Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45-58, the average age being 51, but it is a very individual experience; as a woman you may not necessarily go through the menopause at the same age that your mother did.
For most of us the menopause will last four to five years, although some women may experience symptoms for up to six years.
The time before the menopause when hormone production begins to slow is known as the “peri-menopause”, and can begin as early as 35. The menopause itself is only one day - it’s the day we haven’t had a period for 12 months in a row.
Menopause does not have to mean the end of good health, vitality, femininity or beauty; some find it hard but many women find this time of life liberating and a time for positive change.
But for those of us who do find the menopause a struggle, help is at hand in the shape of a traditional herbal remedy called Black cohosh. Black cohosh is a north american herb that belongs to the buttercup family, and has been used as a remedy to help ease the symptoms associated with the menopause, such as hot flushes and night sweats, since time immemorial. Native american women were the first to use it, centuries ago. Now it is the active ingredient in our herbal remedy, Kira Menopause relief.
